What was the load like? Velocity estimate? Congrats again!

I have a Marlin 1894SS. It has a 1:38" twist just like yours would have i guess. Does it shoot 270 and 300gr loads accuratly? Someone told me 300gr projectiles are too heavy for that twist, i don't believe them but would like to here from others.

I shoot Win 240gr JHP Factory ammo and Speer 240gr HP reloads with great accuracy.

Petander,
I don't have a way to check the velocity, but the load was .430 caliber 320 gr. Cast Performance LFNGC bullet over 22.0 grs. of H110. My best guestimate would be in the 1500 fps. neighborhood. I believe the load was about max. for the ,44 mag. I was grouping about 1.5" at 50 yds. with this load, but that wasn't from a bench, just sort of leaning against a tree. I get about the same group size with the 270 Speer gold dot, and the 300 Hornady XTPs. The Marlin I was using has a 16" ported barrel.

Vas,
I have also heard guys saying they can't use bullets from 270gr. on up, due to the slower twist of the Marlins. I don't know exactly what kind of accuracy was exceptable to them, but for my hunting purposes the 1.5" groups at 50 yds. works. The kill zone on a deer, is about ten inches across, that gives me a lot of leeway. I wouldn't use this gun, if the range of shooting were beyond 150 yds., and that is more a matter of the inherent ballistics of the .44 mag. than a question of load. For deer, under 100 yds. it's hard to beat the .44 mag. I won't win too many target matches with this gun, but it will drop deer very nicely.

Guess i'll have to try some 270 or 280 grain projectiles.

As long as the bullet is stable and not yawing i'm happy

Well I just got back from the first 2 days of Ohio's season and heres my report... I shot a deer today running at about 30 yards. It went down within 10 more yards. It was laying on the edge of a swamp looking up at me and as I approached it, the damn thing got to its feet and stumble jumped deeper into the swamp and died 40 feet out in waste deep swamp water, totaly unreachable as there was thin ice covering the water. Where did I hit it? I dont know, no blood was found. I assume that the bullet did not go all the way through since I coulnt find any blood, I assume I broke through a shoulder and got a lung due to the way it tried to run. Oh the load? It was a 240 grain XTP over 23.3 grains of H110. It shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards and 2-2 1/2 inch groups at 50 open sights on a new model super blackhawk with a 5 inch barrel. Ill have to try it again before I decide to go to a heavier bullet.
You shoot that squirel with that thing, all that will be left is a grease spot!
Vas,
The question of yawing came up when I was first considering these loads, The targets I tried them on, looked like wadcutters were used. I haven't seen any loads I've tried show any sign of yaw. That goes for distances from 25 yards out to 100 yards. I tried different distances, having heard that some loads will show yaw when they first come out of the barrel and then stabilize in flight.

Interesting because i once took a goat here in australia at 350 yards with my 223 rem. Reasonable calibre for aussie goats upto about 200 yards. The ammo used was 64gr winchester PP. My twist is a 1:12" and 63gr is the max recommended bullet for that twist. It went staright through both shoulders of the goat and killed it instantly with great damage. I took that load to the 50M range and the holes were ovals due to yawing. Maybe it stabilised after a certain distance.

Itchy trigger, youprobably don't need a heavier bullet just one of a different design. Those hollowpoints are bad for not opening up, the cavity fills with hair, blood etc. which in effect turns them into a fmj with no cutting edges. I've had some pretty dismal results with those xtps. I'ld suggest a good swc design.
The most expensive bullet there is ain’t worth a plug nickel if it don’t go where its supposed to.
Thanks for your real life experience. After this season Im going to work up a load with a 310 gr hard cast, I think that would put a in and out hole in about anything I plan to shoot, to include hogs. I read on here that others have had good luck with them. I just dont have time to work up a new load before the end of this season.

If you cast your own I suggest wheelweights. Its hard enough to penetrate along ways yet soft enough to get some expansion, and won't lead enough to worry about in a hunting situation. You may want to check with Dry Creek bullets I think they run some from wheelweight once in a while.

Dry Creek will run WW on request. I have some 41 mag bullets in WW he did for me. They lead no more than the hard cast 41s from him (which is to say not at all).
God Bless
Terry
What would a guy do without yall's help?
Thanks,
Todd
