Handloads.Com Forum Handguns Winchester Super Target WST in 45 Colt? | | Author | This thread is locked. | Posted by: HogRiderDate: 12/16/2003 5:57:11 PM Posts: 231 | I picked up a pound of Winchester Super Target (WST) a few weeks ago and had really great experiences with it in 45 Auto and 45 Auto Rim. The powder meters well, has a light color and a very low specific weight which makes it very "filling". Now, the Winchester load data I have only shows WST in 45 Auto, 9mm and smaller stuff.
Since it's becoming my favorite powder for 45 Auto and it is also very clean it seems to me, that this powder should work exceptionally well in 45 Colt for target loads below 1000 fps.
But I am very reluctant to try a powder/cartridge combination where i have absolutely no data.
Has anybody ever used this powder in a larger case like 44 Magnum or Special or 45 Colt? If so - what were the experiences?
Thanks.. | | | | Author | This thread is locked. | | HogRider,
I'm sure there are other Winchester powders that can be used in the .45 Colt. The 231 load they list is the very same exact load they listed in the 70's when 231 was first introduced. They have ignored this great cartridge. John Taffin has an article about the .45 Colt. In it he lists several Winchester powers. But unfortunatly not WST. Here is the link to the article; http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt45lc.htm
JohnK may have it on the home page, but I have this link right in front of me.
If you should find load data for WST, post it for us. I would be interested.

You might start with 6 & see what kind of velocity you get. You are rolling the dice as far as how that powder will perform in the big empty case though. Good Luck. --JJK | | | | Author | This thread is locked. | | I wouldn't wory about the size of the case. There are well known loads using Bullseye, 231, and several others that are faster burning and use less case space than WST.
Think about this. Any good quality primer, properly seated will, when fired out out of a revolver, shoot flame out past the end of the barrel. Think about how small a space exists when the bullet is seated and logic will tell you that the case will be filled with primer flame.
Granted some powders work better than others, but I doubt you would have any problems in that department. | | "If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough." - Mario Andretti | | Author | This thread is locked. | Posted by: HogRiderDate: 12/17/2003 3:47:47 PM Posts: 231 | OK - I will try it when I have emptied some 45 cases again. I will then report back in!
Right now I shoot 255g LSWC with 8.0g Hodgdon UNIVERSAL Clays as a target load!
