Handloads.Com ForumGeneral DiscussionMythbusters: Ice bullets
Anyone else watch the TV show Mythbusters on the Discovery channel? Pretty interesting show, a few weeks ago they explored wether ice bullets actually work. As a target they took a skeleton and put a ballistic geletin body around it then fired the ice bullets into it. They didn't say exactly what load or velocity, but made a comment about "mach 3" so we can assume some fairly heavy loads.

End result? A 30 caliber ice bullet at "mach 3" penetrates about 1" into ballistic gel. I'm sure that would hurt, but wouldn't make a very good assassin bullet. Their point blank range test with a handgun was better, but still only about 3" of penetration.

They also froze some ballistic gel in a mold and fired that, penetration was better but still nothign like a real bullet.

Their conclusion? Ice bullets as an ideal murder tool is a myth.

Now if they'd taken that 30 caliber ice bullet and put it in a 45 caliber sabot so the bullet wouldn't have been stressed/heated going down the barrel things might have been a little different.

Just what I was thinking. Hmm... gotta try with a shotgun just for fun, "cast" some ice slugs and drop them in trap rounds,in the cup.

I saw that too, now I'm really curious about the sabot idea. Love to hear the results on that one.
You shoot that squirel with that thing, all that will be left is a grease spot!
I saw that one too. Those guys are great! Took me a couple episodes to warm up to those two guys, but now I'm hooked! They do some of the craziest things, and their testing methods are PRIMO!

That ice bullet thing was pretty neat. Funny how they couldn't really make a decent firearm from scratch, so they used the innards of a Co2 pellet gun and mounted it into the umbrella for concealment.

The one thing that they did determine with that experiment is they could project a large enough hollowed out round ball packed with enough poison to easily kill, yet the firearm and the shot would be practically undetectable. About as close as they came to making an undetectable lethal weapon.

They sure make some convincing arguments...

I doubt that a sabot would help much. Ice is pretty brittle stuff. I have seen photos of lead bullets fired from revolvers with the barrel removed so the slug was launched directly from the chamber. The setback forces were enough so that the lead slug was noticeably shortened by the acceleration. I think the ice would shatter. The coroner's autopsy would probably read, "death by sno-cone".

"death by sno-cone"

hehe, good one. Welcome aboard Wagner.

Well, if you're going to load from the freezer so to speak, why not go a small step further and load frozen mercury? Bet that'll make a dent in your day.
Does anyone know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Hey fella's. Seen that one to. If im correct, didnt they shoot some frozen meat bullets to? I cant remember how well those did. Anyway, take care all. BBW

I suppose you could do it all with a big high pressure airgun. Give someone a gigantic 'embolism'. No evidence at all.

If anyone has ever seen film of scuba divers killing sharks with a spear with a 'power head' you get the idea. A 12 gauge shell or even a . small .357 will take the head almost completely off a 14 ft tiger shark. Paradoxically it isn't the bullet or all of the shot that does the real damage. It is the high pressure gas that is injected directly into the body by the contact wound. It expands until they pop like a cheap balloon.

They talked about it in one part of the show but as I recally they didn't actually shoot those.

They did on an episode of CSI though.

What about frozen vienna sausages? Should work nicely in a 20 gauge. Death by a small weiner would be pretty humiliating though.
